Anthony Nolan

On returning home from last years Saunders I found an email from the Anthony Nolan Trust publicising a new recruitment drive to get as many people as possible to sign up for their bone marrow donor register. This email struck a chord with me as in the early 1990’s I had myself signed up to their register whilst competing at an event similar to the SLMM. In 2008 I was found to be a match for somebody with leukaemia in need of a stem cell transplant and became a donor. My attending that event back in the early 1990’s changed somebody’s life; you attending the 2012 Saunders could do the same!

This year the Saunders Lakeland Mountain Marathon is teaming up with Anthony Nolan to encourage all of our under 40 competitors, particularly the 18-30 year old males, to sign up for their bone marrow donor register as a part of their new Fit to Spit campaign. Signing up takes about 10 minutes and can be done online, so there will be no effect on your weekend. Once you have signed up you will be sent a saliva testing kit. You use this to send back a sample which they then test to see what tissue type you are. They will then confirm your place on the register and send you a registration card.

If you want to find out more about what Anthony Nolan do, how to register or what is involved in being a donor then please take a look at their web site. I’ll also be around before registration opens on the Friday and again at the finish on Sunday, so if you want to know more about my personal experiences as a donor then I’ll make myself obvious – please come along for a chat.

If you do join the register it would be great to hear from you. Just drop me a quick email to mark@slmm.org.uk so we know how many people have joined up.
