Rules

  1. This event is held in accordance with the rules and safety requirements of the Fell Runners Association. The following additional rules and minimum kit requirements must also be adhered to by all entrants.
  2. All competitors must report to the finish and hand in their SPORTident card, even if they are retiring. This is a vital safety check. Failure to do so could result in a mountain rescue call out, and will result in a life time ban from the SLMM!
  3. All competitors must follow the Countryside Code. In particular it is forbidden to climb maintained walls or fences. Enclosed farmland may only be crossed on a public right of way.
  4. There is a minimum age limit on the Bedafell, Wansfell and Harter Fell courses of 14, on the Carrock Fell and Kirkfell of 16, on the Bowfell and Scafell of 18 and on the Klets of 21. Where one of the two runners is under 18, the other runner must be over 20 and must also be the parent or guardian of the junior runner.
  5. Every pair must remain together at all times except in the event of an emergency.
  6. No dogs are allowed on the competition area, as it is sheep farming land.
  7. The carrying of GPS, GPS phones or any satellite navigation devices are not permitted. Altimeters are allowed. Mobile phones (without built-in GPS) may be carried for emergency use only.
  8. Milk and beer will be available at the Mid-way Camp, but that’s all! Meals will be provided at the conclusion of Sundays courses.
  9. The veterans handicap is open to teams whose combined age is 90 plus or to Klets aged 45 plus.

Minimum Kit

Each individual competitor must wear or carry the following at all times:

  • Suitable footwear
  • Rucksack
  • Sleeping bag
  • Waterproof jacket with hood and waterproof overtrousers (not pertex or other shower proof materials)
  • Long trousers / tracksters or similar
  • Thermal vest or similar
  • Warm thicker top
  • Hat & gloves
  • Torch (suitable for emergency night navigation)
  • Compass & Whistle
  • Pen / pencil and paper.

Each team must carry the following at all times:

  • Tent with sewn in groundsheet, poles and pegs
  • Stove & fuel, matches/lighter
  • food for 2 days
  • emergency food
  • plasters and bandage.

The equipment listed above is the minimum you are expected to carry. In bad weather you should consider carrying additional items of clothing. If you are in any doubt as to what might be acceptable within these rules either take additional items or ask us before you start. Kit checks will be made and we reserve the right to disqualify any competitors who, in our opinion, do not have the necessary kit to survive an emergency situation out on the hills.
